Gestures
of people often play an
important role in
communication in every day life. In the
East since ancient times, the
people knew the healing power
of gestures, in which the
fingers were applied in a special
way against
various diseases and ailments
as well as in difficult
situations.
These gestures called mudras
are connected usually with the
flow of energy and emotions in
our bodies.
The pure dance
called nritta is accompanied
by various combinations of
gestures that have no
meaning.
But in the
highest lithurgical form of
dance called Bharatanatyam,
mudras were formerly used to
indicate the motion and
positions of the heavenly
bodies in the sky.
There are 24 gestures of
asamyuta hastas according to
Natyashastra, which can be
associated with the 24 Lunar
half-months, and 28 gestures
according to Nandikeshvara,
which can be interpreted as
the symbols of Lunar
nakshatras or asterisms
marking the Moon's path.
