The ChronoMeaning of the Dance of Shiva

Shiva Maha-Kala is Benevolent Great Time, the most important Vedic concept according to Shankara (8th c. AD). His cosmic dances symbolise the flow of Time, the rotation of the universe, of the Sun, the Moon, the Planets, the Seasons, the Day and the Night, and the end and beginning of the Year. You are about to discover this mistery through our illastrations and translations from Bharata-Natya-Shastra.

Shiva's two different cosmic dances — that is Tandavam and Lasyam — take place in Chidambaram or in the Sky of Sentiments, Rasas and Bhavas, which are harmonized with the sentiments of moving Planets and passing Months. His head is crowned with crescent Moon showing that Shiva is embodiment of the synodical month starting with New Moon period.
